Ready Player One is one non stop action adventure with breathless action right from the word go. Adapted from the novel by Ernest Cline it is a Spielberg masterclass in motion capture. Spielberg has used technology to create a virtual world which is majestic, full of adrenaline and which takes gaming to never seen before levels.

Ready Player One is set in the year 2045- a dystopian future where many cities have become slums. People spend most of their time in Oasis to escape reality. OASIS is a virtual reality world created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance) with his partner Ogden Morrow (Simon Pegg). Oasis allows players to live out their fantasies. People can become what they want and look like the way they want by creating their avatars. You can gamble in a casino or climb Mt Everest. You can hang out with friends whom you haven’t met in reality and who are definitely losers in real life. Every conquest win, earns you virtual money which you can spend in various stuff like upgrading your armor or car.

Halliday announces a contest where the players need to find a golden Easter egg inside a gate. The gate opens with the help of three keys hidden anywhere inside the OASIS. The player who claims the Easter egg receives the ownership of of OASIS. This attracts lots of individual players like Parzival/Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), Art3mis/Samantha Cooke (Olivia Cooke) and conglomerates like Innovative Online Industries (IOI). Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) heads IOI and employs researchers and gamers to earn the control of OASIS.

Over the quest, Parzival meets Art3mis, Aech/Helen Harris (Lena Waithe), Sho/Zhou (Philip Zhao) and Daito/Toshiro (Win Morisaki). They together form a group called “High Five” which work together to get the Easter egg before IOI. Whether they are able to do it forms the rest of the plot.

The best part of Ready player One are the Easter eggs in the movie. It has pop culture references from various previous famous movies, series, video games and music. It is a nerdgasm of sorts which will take you on a trip down the memory lane. Ready Player One will invoke the childhood memories and friends with whom you had watched them. And all these references are littered across the conquest where people race against King Kong and the T-Rex. This is in fact a double edged sword as the movie would not connect if you haven’t watched the other movies.

Spielberg lately I believe is not in top of his game, movies Like The Post have been good but missing of the famous Spielberg magic. Ready Player One is more about the quest rather than the meaning of influences on our lives. This makes the movie more of a transactional roller coaster than a feel train. Ready Player One is really good when it comes to CGI. But that is expected out of Spielberg who is known in the industry for embedding such high end technology in movies. The action sequences are totally rad and the world created inside the OASIS is impressive.

Acting chops takes a backseat in the CGI filled Ready Player One. Tye Sheridan is good but is not strong enough to be the lead. Olivia Cooke has a meatier role than him. Mark Rylance, the new muse of Spielberg tries to add soul to this movie but fails to do so.

Its a good attempt but coming from the master storyteller is a big disappointment. Watch it and share your rating above.
