The Proposal is a cliched story of two completely different people who despise each other and end up falling in love. An unfortunate incident makes them spend time with each other which makes them grow close and better understand themselves. The Proposal begins like just another love story but by the end leaves a warm feeling inside.

Margret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is the executive editor in chief of a book publishing company. , She is a tyrant and her subordinates fear her. She is code named as “Witch” and whenever she enters the bay, the office messenger buzzes to inform every team member to act like they are working. Initial few scenes reminded me of Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada. But she is never convincing as the bitchy boss nor does the movie spend any time in detailing it. She has an assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) who takes her shit because of his dream of becoming an editor one day. And she holds the keys to his dreams.

Margret is a Canadian, who will be deported because her expiring visa which would mean that she will be jobless for a year and the just- fired Bob Spaulding (Asif Mandvi) would be re-instated to her position. Thus, she persuades Andrew to marry her as this will fetch her the green card. Both blackmail each other in their prenup negotiations and then head off to Sitka, Alaska to meet Andrew’s parents and get married. The Proposal till here is just like any other love story and given the cliches you know the direction in which it is heading.

But their time is Sitka comes as a pleasant surprise to Margret and the audience. Andrew turns out to be filthy rich- his family is into every business in the town. There, Andrew’s family treats her fondly and accepts her as one of their own. The family comprises of mom Grace (Mary Steenburgen), father Joe (Craig T Nelson) and grandma Annie (Betty White). She slowly warms up to them and the community spirit and even saves their dog from the eagles. She falls off the boat, does a weird nature dance and eventually falls in love with Andrew and his family.

The Proposal is a simple story- in fact a very predictable plot. But the characters bring life to the story and make it a good watch. Apart from Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock is one of the most likable actresses working in Hollywood . She knows her limits and acts within them. You can’t expect too much from her but she delivers just whats needed. Sometimes I feel she was born for all the pleasant roles. She is sincere in her roles and delivers such warmth into your heart. And who doesn’t like Ryan Reynolds!

But the stars of The Proposal are the supporting characters. Mary is the mother who fights with Joe for Andrew. She is the one who tries a lot to mend the son and father relationship. Joe doesn’t warm immediately to the shady couple because he has been a very protective father. But eventually accepts Andrew’s life choices because of Grace. Betty White is timeless and really cute as Gammy Annie. And then there is Oscar Nunez as Ramone- the go to guy for everything. He is a shop keeper, waiter and a male stripper.

The Proposal highlights the importance of a family. It proves the adage that you don’t just marry a person, you marry a family. And who wouldn’t want to marry into a family like the Paxtons. Watch it as it will leave you happy and please share your rating above.
